Martin County High School recognizes the academic and personal value of reading. To improve each student’s reading ability and to encourage a love of life-long reading, MCHS is continuing the Summer Reading Program.
Each student is required to
read at least one book over the summer
with the hope that many more books will be read and enjoyed. During the
first week of school, each student will be expected to answer specific
questions about one book he/she has read over the summer. Students are
encouraged to take notes and to bring them to class to help with the writing
assignment. A grade will be given based on the writing assignment completed.
Please review the attached list of
books suggested by various best seller lists and educational websites. As a
concerned parent, please preview the list with your child to assist in
selecting the best book for your child’s interest and ability. We recommend
selecting a book that is considered slightly challenging to help extend your
son’s/daughter’s reading ability. To assist you, we have provided a Lexile
scale score where available. The Lexile Framework measures both reader
ability and text difficulty on the same scale, called the Lexile scale. The
typical range for grades 9-12 is 855 – 1300. Ask your child if he/she is one
of the many students who have been assessed and know their lexile level. For
more information on lexiles, please visit
www.lexile.com.
Students who will be taking a Pre-AP, Honors or Advanced Placement English class need to refer to the specific reading assignment for the appropriate grade level. Only the assigned novel needs to be read. If you have difficulty printing from the links below, a hard copy can be obtained at the school's office.
If you have questions, please contact Virginia Skinner, Assistant Principal, at: Enjoy a safe summer filled with reading.
